5S is a philosophy and methodology for organizing and managing the workplace and work flow with the intent of improving efficiency by eliminating waste and improving flow. Simply put, 5S is a method for organizing a workplace, especially a shared workplace (like a shop floor or an office space), and keeping it organized.

To achieve one piece or small batch flow of products or services, workplace organization, cleanliness, and standardization are imperative. The 5S approach is highly effective at removing waste from your workplace and creating a safer, cleaner, and healthier work environment. Simple techniques are used to develop and improve effective workplace organization, safety, visual communication, and general cleanliness and housekeeping.

5S Workshop

A critical factor to successfully implementing and sustaining the benefits of a 5S program is the significant role your employees will play. Pinnacle Enterprise Group (Pinnacle) developed this 5S Workshop to be a practical hands-on experience. Actual areas of your facility are chosen for improvement. These areas serve as the practical hands-on exercises for the application of each 5S technique. The 5S Workshop can be taught in either the office or shop floor environment.

In keeping with Pinnacle's Lean QMS® approach, the 5S program is sustained within the context and culture of your quality management system (QMS) or business operating system (BOS). Pinnacle provides the following three customizable models that are directly integrated into your current QMS or BOS:

  • 5S Work Environment - Process Map model of a Support Process for the implementation and ongoing support/improvement of the 5S program
  • 5S Implementation Plan - Template of an implementation plan that ensures all pillars of a 5S program are considered, planned, and implemented.
  • 5S Audit Checklist - Audit checklist that facilitates the ongoing/routine measurement and monitoring of the 5S program.

Upon completion of this 5S Workshop, participants will be able to understand and immediately apply the 5S concepts in your facility.

5S Workshop Objectives

1S - Sort

Identify the items that are needed to perform work in the work areas. Clear (sort out) all other items from the work area. Benefits:

  • Extra work space

  • Improved utilization of materials, supplies, and resource
  • More visible work flow
  • Improved employee satisfaction (better place to work)
  • Improved quality

2S - Set In Order

All needed items have a place in the work area and each needed item is in the correct place. Improve ease of or need for retrieval. Benefits:

  • Elimination of time, motion, and effort needed to search for or retrieve tools and supplies (tools and supplies are located at point of use)
  • Improved safety through an organized workplace
  • Increased productivity

3S - Shine

Proactive/preventive housekeeping to keep work areas, work surfaces, and equipment clean and free from dirt, debris, oil, etc. Benefits:

  • Cleaner and more satisfying place to work
  • Improved Quality
  • Maintenance issues exposed faster (planned downtime vs. unplanned downtime)
  • Improved safety (fewer accidents)

4S - Standardize

Do things in a consistent and standard way. Standardize activities, procedures, instruction, schedules, and the persons responsible for helping keep the workplace clean and organized. Standardize work area layouts and storage techniques wherever possible.

5S - Sustain

Integrate 5S principles into the organization's QMS or BOS in order to sustain new standards and continually improve the workplace.

5S Workshop Agenda

Day 1

Pinnacle instructor and your 5S or Lean Champion only:

  • Instructor tours facility
  • Instructor and sponsors select pilot area (from future state Value Stream Map when the Workshop is part of the Lean QMS® Curriculum

  • Exercise - design shine schedules and assignments for pilot area
  • Standardize
  • Exercise - create visual aids and standard work for the pilot area

Day 3

  • Review day 2 activities and Implementation Plan
  • Sustain
  • Exercise - defining outstanding actions to complete pilot area
  • Auditing with checklist and tracking results
  • Complete implementation
